With a doctorate in Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine and over two decades in integrative health, fitness, and behavior change, Dr. Abbey Jo Shulkin specializes in weight loss and binge eating recovery for high-achieving women.

Her work began with her own story, growing up in a family where obesity was normal, battling binge eating disorder and bulimia, and searching for answers that diets and programs could never deliver.

Why her approach works

  • Lived credibility: 35+ years maintaining a healthy weight after recovery, grounded in honesty, willingness, and practical change.

  • Whole-person method: addresses mindset, behavior, and emotions, not just food lists or rules.

  • Sustainable skills: clients learn to identify triggers, build supportive routines, and create a balanced relationship with food that lasts.

Here’s how the book can help you…

So far, 18 powerful voices have come together for this transformative project.

Each pillar offers a window into a moment that changed everything, where healing began, clarity broke through, and a new path was chosen.

Here’s a glimpse into one of those stories:

THE BREAKING POINT

What began as “occasional overeating” became an all-consuming cycle.

Binge eating dictated Abbey’s days; shame and isolation defined her nights. Diets, programs, and even years of therapy couldn’t loosen food’s grip. She felt hopeless and alone, convinced her struggle meant she was weak or broken. Watching classmates move forward with life only deepened the despair. She hit a point where she couldn’t imagine going on much longer.

Here’s a glimpse into one of those stories:

WHAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Seeing the Truth: It Wasn’t Willpower, It Was Addiction

Meeting a young woman who had recovered changed the story. Guided to an addiction treatment center, Abbey realized she wasn’t a “freak”, she was using certain foods like a drug. Naming it removed the shame and opened a practical path to healing.

In her chapter, Abbey shows readers how this reframe unlocks lasting recovery:

  • Identify trigger foods & patterns without moral judgment.

  • Rebuild self-trust with honest, doable steps instead of extreme rules.

  • Create freedom that lasts—a healthy weight supported by new mindsets, behaviors, and emotional skills.
